KMC Volcano Weekend July 25 - July 27, 2008

What's happening?

The Volcano runs are scenic, yet challenging races through the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and will be held on Saturday, July 26, with 5, 10 and 26.2 mile runs.

This event is sponsored by the Volcano Arts Center and Kilauea Military Camp (KMC).

Online information can be found at the Volcano Art Center web site.

The Volcano Hash House Harriers will run on Sunday morning, July 27.

Da’ tentative plan . . .

Friday 25 July - Golfing: Those interested in golfing can coordinate between themselves and determine their arrival time at KMC. After a regroup there they can do walk-on sign-ups at the nearby Volcano golf course or at Sea Mountain Golf course on the beach side in Pahala, about a 20-minute drive further down the road. Past history has proven that walk-on tee times are all that is required. If one course is crowded you just drive to the other one. Rain gear is recommended, as there's occasionally a shower or two on the course because of its elevation.

Snorkeling: There are no organized snorkeling adventures planned for this year but Kealakekua Bay, near the Kona side, is one of Pele's best snorkeling spots for viewing coral heads, lava tubes, octopii, Moray eels, parrot and goat fish, and, once in a while, a pod of spinner dolphins reknowned to be hanging out across the bay. This was the last place on earth that Captain James Cook, who stumbled upon our islands, saw on his fated doom day of 14 February 1779. Dinner options if you go here will limit you to Volcano Village or driving to Kona because it is a very long drive back to Hilo town for the Friday night dinner gatherings held there.

Friday Night Dinner/Social/Pau Hana Hui: 1800/1900ish dinner at Thai Thai Restaurant in Volcano. Cafe Pesto's and Rueben's Mexican Restaurant in Hilo have been past hash choices, but now there are some good choices in the Volcano area. If you are coming in on one of the later evening flights, though, then you'll want to dine in Hilo where places stay open later. Friday's Pau Hana Hui usually occurs in the Lava Lounge at KMC and sometimes overflows to or outside of a hash cabin or two.

Saturday, 26 July: The Volcano Wilderness Runs start very early on Saturday morning. They continue until early-afternoon with the awards program at the finish line area. Hashers gather for informal down downs and moral support for the remaining runners near the finish line area that starts as soon as your run is over. Later in the afternoon you can explore the Volcano Park and surrounding areas. Saturday night we regroup and socialize (drink) into the night. Bowling and other events to be announced based on general interest. Some folks pack a cooler and grab their flashlights to go visit/experience the volcano lava flowing into the ocean. Lava viewing and hiking distances to see the flows vary with Madame Pele's desire. For the latest updates on lava flows, check out the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park web site. Warm clothes, flashlights and extra batteries are recommended along with whatever other goodies you like to hike with. Nighttime viewing of the birth of another one of Pele's islands is a life humbling experience and it can still get chilly even with all the hot lava.

Sunday, 27 July: The annual Big Island running of the Volcano Hash House Harriers will be held in the morning with start time (usually 8 AM) and location to be announced Saturday evening. This is an A to A, BYOB hash. It can sometimes be long (1+ hours), but we'll try to include a "turkey trail," too. After the trail, we talk story and hold some short informal religion and down-downs (BYOB). After down-downs most Oahu hashers check out of KMC to go sightsee, golfing or to lunch in Pahoa town with margaritas and the best Mexican food on the island. You may also want to consider touring past Hilo towards Akaka Falls or other such sites before catching that plane back to wherevah ya came from.

Oh, one more thing - Leave the lava rocks behind!

The majority of hashers stay at Kilauea Military Camp (KMC), which is completely booked. You may need to arrange other accommodations or share with someone that has a cabin. If you're active duty or retired military, you should call Denise (be sure to ask for her by name) at KMC today to make your reservations or be placed on standby.

Call KMC reservations: 438-6707 (from Oahu only)

or (808) 967-8334.

Or email (tell her you’re a Hasher).

Some Rates: Deluxe 1 Bdrm Cabin. (sleeps 4) $112 - (Civilian rates) (Military cheaper)

Deluxe 2 Bdrm Cabin (sleeps 6) $123

Standard 3 / 4 Bdrm Cabin (share with 8 or 10) $129

Other options may still be available. Dorm rooms ($14) and open bay dorms ($11) are also available, but aren’t recommended due to the "serious" non-hashing runners that are only there for the races (they want to sleep, not party).

See KMC's Rates & Eligibility page for a complete schedule.
